Returning to our story, we find that Israel's 40 years in the wilderness are drawing to a close...
Most of those who had experienced
'slavery' (representing spiritual 'slavery to sin') back in Egypt,
have now been purged from the ranks by 'death'...
They have died here in the wilderness.
In a sense then ---
Moses is still on the scene, but he is soon to join the others who died in the wilderness.
This raises an obvious question
---
Who is going to lead Israel after Moses dies?
In the following passage, God gives Moses the answer ---
Deuteronomy 3:28 "...command Joshua, and encourage him and strengthen him; for he shall go over before this people; and he shall cause them to inherit the land which you will see".
And Moses then informs the people ---
Deuteronomy 31:7 "Then Moses called Joshua and said to him in the sight of all Israel, "Be strong and of good courage, for you must go with this people to the land which the Lord has sworn to their fathers to give them, and you shall cause them to inherit it."
Please note that it is "Joshua"
who "shall cause" Israel
"to inherit the land".
The deeper significance of this will become apparent a little later.
God also has Moses tell the people what to expect in the promised land ---
Numbers 33:52-53 "...you shall drive out all the inhabitants of the land from before you, destroy all their engraved stones, destroy all their molded images, and demolish all their high places; (v.53) you shall dispossess the inhabitants of the land and dwell in it, for I have given you the land to possess".
Notice the words, "drive
out" and
"dispossess"...
As these words indicate, Moses is telling the people to expect 'warfare'
in the promised land.
Again, the deeper significance of this will become obvious a little later.
So then... what next?
Well... take a look at the tabernacle
diagram...
As noted above ---
So... if the tabernacle's symbolism continues to prove accurate...
And sure enough, as you can see in the following passage, Moses verifies that this will indeed be the case ---
Deuteronomy 4:22 "...I must die in this land, I must not cross over the Jordan; but you shall cross over and possess that good land."
Here, we find that the "bronze
basin" and its 'water' represents the "Jordan"
river.
Israel must cross the Jordan on the way into the promised land.
And again, the deeper significance of this will become obvious a little later.
After he has instructed Israel
and appointed Joshua, Moses is led by God to a high place,
from which he is allowed to see the promised land in the distance. Then ---
Deuteronomy 34:5 "...Moses the servant of the Lord died there in the land of Moab..."
